Dennis Kelly was the player in Rockwell's painting "The Recruit." Look magazine had commissioned Rockwell to do a painting to appear in its September 20, 1966 issue in a story about college football and the evils of recruiting. "I am convinced that Rockwell confused my Irish nose for a classic Italian nose," said Kelly. "It also helped that I lived nearby so I could spend the time necessary for Rockwell to paint the picture." Head Coach Frank Navarro and trainer Joe Altott are also in the painting that has Kelly in the pose that Michaelangelo used to sculpt Giuliano de' Medici in the Medici tombs. Kelly was startled when he answered the phone at his home in Pittsfield on the first morning Rockwell was to set up the painting and heard Norman Rockwell on the other end. "He just asked me matter-of-factly if I wanted him to swing by and pick me up on his way to Williams," said Kelly. "Mr. Rockwell is by far the most humble famous person I have ever met."

Beginning with a 12 pound Alabaster stone, Cristine (class of 1972) used a combination of pneumatic and electric rotary tools, a mallet, chisel, rasps & files. She finished the piece with sanding, sealing and polishing. It took 12 months to take the stone from its original shape to the final piece.

One of the most extraordinary features of Shona Sculpture is that the majority of the artists have had no Western training. The sculpture is completely created by hand, with no power tools. Many artists quarry the rock themselves and accomplish the shaping using a chessing comb, a toothed steel piece that fits in the slot of a masonry hammer. The work is sanded very smooth and heated in front of an open fire. Bee's wax or Carnuba wax is melted in, then buffed to a wonderful lustrous patina.

Acrylic on stretched canvas, framed size is 22" x 28". The 210 acre Tanglewood estate was given to the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1936 by Mary Aspinwall Tappan (descendant of Chinese merchant William F. Sturgis and abolitionist Lewis Tappan.) The estate was named after a book by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. While living in "the Little Red House" on the Tappan family estate, Hawthorne wrote Tanglewood Tales (1853), a re-writing of a number of Greek myths for boys and girls. The title may have been inspired by the thick tangled trees that cover the grounds. When the manor house was completed in 1865, its owner William Aspinwall Tappan, named the estate Tanglewood.
